This policy says what personal data Book Reader keeps about you, why, where, and what you can ask of us. The person responsible is the operator of Book Reader, based in Zürich, Switzerland, reachable at support@bookreader.ch.
1. What we keep
Your account. When you sign in with Google we receive your name, your email address and your profile picture. We keep your name and email to run your account and to write to you about it.
Your books and your reading. The ebook files you upload, the text prepared from them, the translations the service produced for them, the words you tapped with their sentences, and where you are in each book. This is the service itself; without it there is nothing to read.
Your settings. The languages you read and learn, your reading preferences, and your theme.
Technical records. Server logs with your IP address, the pages you opened and errors that occurred, kept to run the service and to find faults. We do not use tracking or advertising cookies, and the landing site sets no cookies at all.
Payment. Stripe, our payment processor, handles your card and billing details under its own privacy policy. We receive your subscription status and receipts, not your card number.
2. Where it goes
Your data is stored on servers in Switzerland or the European Economic Area. Three kinds of companies work for us with parts of it:
- Language-model services, to write the translations you tap for. They receive sentences from your books, without your name or account, and only as needed to answer. These providers may process the text in the United States. We choose providers that do not use the text they receive to train their models.
- Stripe, for payment, as an independent controller of your billing data.
- Our hosting provider, which runs the servers.
We do not sell personal data and we do not share your books with anyone. We hand data to authorities only when the law requires it.
3. How long we keep it
- Your books, until you delete them or your account. The uploaded file itself is removed as soon as you delete the book; prepared copies expire within 28 days.
- Your words, sentences and reading positions, until you delete the book or your account.
- Your account, until you delete it. Deleted accounts are removed within 30 days, apart from what the law requires us to keep, such as receipts.
- Server logs, for 30 days.
4. Your rights
Under the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection, and the GDPR if it applies to you, you can ask us what we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, receive a copy of it, and object to how we use it. Write to support@bookreader.ch. You can also complain to the Swiss Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner, or to the authority in your country.
5. Changes
We may change this policy. We will tell you by email about a material change before it takes effect. The date at the top shows the current version.
