These terms are the agreement between you and the operator of Book Reader for your use of bookreader.ch and app.bookreader.ch (the service). By creating an account you accept them.
1. Who we are
Book Reader is operated by its owner, based in Zürich, Switzerland. The legal details are on the imprint. You can reach us at support@bookreader.ch.
2. What the service is
Book Reader is a web app for reading your own ebooks in a language you are learning. You upload an ebook file, the service prepares it for reading, and while you read you can tap a word to see its translation for the sentence it stands in. Tapped words are kept as study cards that you can review and export. The translations are produced automatically by language-model services, described in section 5.
3. Your account
You sign in with a Google account. The account is yours alone: keep it to yourself and tell us if you think someone else has used it. You must be at least 16 years old, or have the consent of a parent or guardian, to use the service.
4. Your books
The books you upload are yours, and they stay yours. You must have the right to upload each one: a book you bought without copy protection, a book that is free to share, or a book whose copyright has run out. You are responsible for that right, and you confirm it each time you upload.
To do its work the service needs to store your books, prepare them for reading and send their sentences to language-model services for translations. You give us permission to do exactly that, and nothing more. We do not share your books with anyone else, we do not use them to train anything, and we do not read them.
If a rights holder tells us that a book was uploaded without the right to do so, we may remove it, and we may close the account of someone who does this repeatedly. Write to copy@bookreader.ch if you hold rights to a work and believe it is on the service without permission.
5. Translations are automatic and can be wrong
Every translation the service shows is written by a language model for the sentence you are reading. Language models make mistakes: a translation can be wrong, incomplete, or odd. The service is a help for reading, not a translation you can rely on for anything that matters, such as legal, medical or financial text, and we make no promise that any translation is correct.
6. Price, payment and renewal
The service costs $10 a month, paid in advance. Each month includes an allowance of 3,500,000 tokens of translation, the measure of the text the service reads and writes to produce translations for you; your account shows how much of it you have used. When the allowance is used up, tapping a new word shows no translation until the next month begins; everything already translated stays. Unused allowance does not carry over.
Your subscription renews automatically each month until you cancel it. You can cancel at any time from your account; the month you have paid for runs to its end, and you are not charged again. Refunds are described in the refund policy.
Payments are taken by Stripe, our payment processor. We do not see or keep your card details. If we change the price or the allowance, we will tell you by email at least 30 days before the change takes effect, and you can cancel before it does.
7. What you may not do
- Upload a book you do not have the right to upload.
- Share your account, or use someone else's.
- Copy the service's translations or study cards in bulk, or use automated tools to extract them.
- Try to break into the service, disturb it, or get around its limits.
- Use the service outside its purpose of reading your own books, for example by uploading far more than you could read or by running automated uploads. We may set limits on storage, uploads and translation use, and we will show them in the app.
- Use the service for anything unlawful.
8. Availability and changes
We work to keep the service available and to fix what breaks, and we may change or remove features as it develops. We will tell you by email before a change that takes something away you are paying for. The service is provided as it is; we do not promise that it will be free of errors or interruptions.
9. Liability
Our liability to you for any claim arising from the service is limited to the subscription fee you paid for the month in which the event you complain of took place. This limit does not apply to damage we cause intentionally or through gross negligence, to death or personal injury, or where the law does not allow it to be limited.
10. Ending the agreement
You can delete your account at any time from its settings, or by writing to us. Your subscription ends with the paid month, and your data is deleted as described in the privacy policy. We may close an account that breaks these terms, after telling you why, unless the breach makes that impossible. If an account puts the service or other readers at risk, we may suspend it or remove the books concerned first and tell you why afterwards.
11. Law and disputes
Swiss law applies to this agreement, and the courts of Zürich, Switzerland, decide disputes about it. If you are a consumer, the protections of the law of your home country that cannot be waived still apply, and you may bring a claim in your home courts where the law gives you that right.
12. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms. We will tell you by email at least 30 days before a material change takes effect. The date at the top shows the current version.
